How do Vivera retainers work?
Once your orthodontic treatment with BRIUS®, Invisalign or braces is complete, we’ll take digital impressions with the iTero® device or use your final ClinCheck™ planning stage to create your custom-made Vivera retainer.
When you first begin wearing your retainer, you’ll be instructed to wear it full-time, day and night, for one year. Consistent wear prevents your teeth from “relapsing”, or returning back to their original positions before treatment.
All you have to do is wear your retainer as instructed, clean it regularly and store it properly in your designated retainer carrying case to preserve your new smile.
Vivera retainers are designed to last
- Vivera retainers are at least 30% stronger and 2x as durable as other leading clear retainers.
- They’re custom-designed and fitted just for your smile. If necessary, they can include features such as pontics, bite ramps, and fixed lingual wires depending on your unique orthodontic needs.
- Vivera retainers can be used in combination with the Invisalign™ Professional Whitening System. Be sure to speak with Dr. Lin before whitening your teeth on your own!
How long do Vivera retainers last?
You’ll get 4 sets of retainers, each with one retainer custom-made for your top teeth and another retainer custom-made for your bottom teeth. Each set can last for up to 5 years with proper wear and care. As long as you don’t lose or damage your retainers, they can carry you through the next two decades!
Vivera Retainers Vs. Essix Retainers
Like Vivera retainers, Essix retainers are clear and virtually-invisible when they’re in place. Both retainer types look similar, but the SmartTrack material used for Vivera retainers is more durable and thicker than the material used in Essix retainers.
Vivera retainers are specially engineered to last, and Essix retainers may require replacing sooner.
How to clean Vivera clear retainers
1. Rinse
Each time you take your retainers out, rinse them off immediately with lukewarm water. (Never use hot water on your retainers. This can damage or misshapen them.)
2. Brush
Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of non-abrasive toothpaste to gently brush your retainers.
3. Soak
To soak your retainers, you can use Invisalign cleaning crystals.
Don’t eat or drink beverages other than water with your retainers in place. This will cause them to become discolored and can damage the material. Check out our retainers page for more about the ‘Do’s and Don’ts of Retainer Wear & Care’.
